The Kingsbridge Travel Bag is made entirely by hand from our stock of Oak Bark Tanned Leather.
The main body of the bag is hand-stitched with tough braided thread. The fittings are solid brass, UK sourced from a Midlands foundry.
The lining is made from suede.
".... bag safely received this morning - it is beautiful and I am so glad that I saw you on Countryfile last Sunday otherwise I would never have known about Tanner Bates. It is so nice to have a bag that is unique and traditionally crafted - you may even convert me from my usual Mulberry handbags! " V. R.
'The design came to me during a 5 week trip to Hawaii and Baja Mexico. I was carrying an iPad, writing journal, pens and pencils, passport, tickets, keys and mobile phone. I wanted a stylish, not too big bag to hold all these things and to be able to easily access them.'
We make our oak bark leather bags from leather that was originally made for bridles or stirrup leathers but because of the exacting standards of the equestrian trade these hides were put to the side, rejected, because of surface scratching, superficial scarring or uneven dyeing.
This pile of rejects has been building up over more than 30 years. We are now re-visiting these old hides and selecting those with loads of character so that each of our bags can be unique, bursting with character and individuality. No two are the same.
This isn't pretend vintage this leather is the real thing.
Each bag is carefully made by hand in the Tanner Bates workshop by skilled leather craftsmen. Our patterns are selectively positioned on the hides and the leather is cut by hand using specialist semi-circular knives.
Tanner Bates bags are made to last. All edges and stitching are exposed so that should the stitching ever break repair is simple. All stress points are reinforced and double stitched. The D ring attaching shoulder strap to the bag is reinforced with a metal strip so that the copper rivet secures 6 layers, 2 of which are metal. Heirloom quality!
Our Naturally tanned leather is tough and can take a battering. We stitch it with a durable rot resistant thread which will give years of service. Occasionally a dose of Tanner Bates Liquid wax will make it look good as new.
Naturally tanned leather benefits from and will look its very best if given an occasional dose of natural waxes and oils.
