There is a variation of markings and colour shades randomly across the hide. We are very happy to email images of our current stock of oak bark tanned hides to illustrate variations in shade and markings.
We supply the Devon Leather Messenger Bag with a tough cotton web strap. We recommend cotton web because it is light in weight and at 5cm wide it spreads the load and stays securely on the shoulder. If you prefer a leather strap we are happy to supply it.
The Devon Leather Messenger is stitched by hand with braided thread and all the stress points are reinforced for maximum durability.
The fittings are solid brass, UK sourced from our Midlands foundry.
The lining is skin from hair sheep tanned by Pittards in Yeovil Somerset UK
We make our oak bark leather bags from leather that was originally made for bridles or stirrup leathers but because of the exacting standards of the equestrian trade these hides were put to the side, rejected, because of surface scratching, superficial scarring or uneven dyeing.
This pile of rejects has been building up over the years. We are now re-visiting these old hides and selecting those with loads of character so that each of our bags can be unique, bursting with character and individuality. No two are the same.
This isn't pretend vintage this leather is the real thing.
Each bag is carefully made by hand in the Tanner Bates workshop by skilled leather craftsmen. Our patterns are selectively positioned on the hides and the leather is cut by hand using specialist semi-circular knives.
Tanner Bates bags are made to last. All edges and stitching are exposed so that should the stitching ever break repair is simple. All stress points are reinforced and double stitched. The D ring attaching shoulder strap to the bag is reinforced with a metal strip so that the copper rivet secures 6 layers, 2 of which are metal.

Our Naturally tanned leather is tough and can take a battering. We stitch it with a durable rot resistant thread which will give years of service. Occasionally a dose of Tanner Bates Liquid wax will make it look good as new.
Naturally tanned leather benefits from and will look its very best if given an occasional dose of natural waxes and oils.
